As part of our 70th Anniversary celebrations, we are very pleased and proud to announce that our main Arena event this year will feature “Invicta Medieval Combat”, one of the UK’s leading medieval armoured combat teams.
Medieval Knights Battling in Abinger
Their fighters use armour and weaponry typical of the 14th – 16th centuries. They come as close as it’s possible to get to the way medieval knights battled each other, without getting in a time machine!
“In a tournament the aim is to put the opposing fighter(s) on the floor, while staying on your feet yourself”!
Their fights are not re-enactments or demonstrations: they are genuine tournaments, with winners and losers, in which they battle with real (but blunted!) axes, swords and halberds (a two-handed weapon, combining an axe blade, a spike and a hook). They say:
“In a tournament the aim is to put the opposing fighter(s) on the floor, while staying on your feet yourself”! Many of them are serving members of the armed forces, reservists, police and firefighters.

Invicta events
Invicta appears each summer at The Loxwood Joust, as well as taking part in tournaments throughout the UK and internationally. They are a highly respected member of the worldwide Buhurt community and last year, took part in the World Championships in Hungary. Read more about them on the Invicta website
We are delighted that they are taking time out from their busy schedule to take part in this year’s 70th Abinger Medieval Fair. Between performances, their fighters will be happy to answer questions about what they do and they welcome enquiries about joining them – from both men and women.
